According to data published by the GPP, provided by the INE as preliminary data on imports of pigs for slaughter, imports decreased by 10.1% in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period of 2025, falling from 428,580 head last year to 385,088 head this year. In terms of total weight, this decreased by 8.2%, from 46,549 tonnes (average weight of 108.4 kg) in 2025 to 42,745 tonnes (average weight of 111.0 kg) this year. Therefore, fewer but heavier pigs entered Portugal in 2026 than in the previous year, continuing a trend seen over the past 4–5 years in terms of average pig weight.
As for piglets weighing less than 50 kg live weight, 55,584 head entered Portugal in 2026, with an average weight of 10.3 kg live weight, compared with 44,837 head in 2025, with an average weight of 10.85 kg live weight. In other words, 10,747 more head entered this year than in 2025 (+24%), but with an average live weight 550 g lower.
Imports of pork and pork products increased by 7.8%, from 50,243 tonnes in 2025 to 54,165 tonnes in 2026. Meat imports were broken down as follows: frozen pork imports decreased by 0.6%, from 11,990 tonnes in 2025 to 11,914 tonnes in 2026. Fresh/chilled pork imports increased by 10.5%, from 38,253 tonnes in 2025 to 42,251 tonnes in 2026. Offal imports increased by 50%, from 791 tonnes in 2025 to 1,186 tonnes in 2026.
In terms of value, import sales revenue decreased by 13.1% in 2026 (€240.506 million) compared with 2025 (€276.871 million).
